Blog #3 – Saving the one and only Earth

In this research project, I’m would like to explore on the topic of ‘Saving the Earth’. The Earth’s balance has been upset throughout the years of the human race. Growing human populations, global warming, depletion of natural resources, species extinctions and wars make this an extremely dangerous time in our history. Research has shown that the Earth’s life span might be shorten if humans still continue to upset its order. So are NUS doing their part on conservation of our Earth too?

The importance of this attitudinal survey, allows us to gauge the awareness level of students and lecturers in NUS on conservation topic. In addition, to influence them that more can be done to improve the conservations of the Earth. This survey also can be provided as a means of suggestion and feedback from the student body as well as the lecturers, allows a better overview of what more can be done.

The objective of this research report is to find out whether NUS is able to increase the awareness of the environmental problems in the university. This research will undoubtedly lead us to better understand how we can change our attitudes towards our environment and thus insure a healthy future for our planet.

For this project, the target readers will be the Campus Sustainability Committee. The potential readers are the students and staffs of NUS.

I agree that an attitudinal survey is necessary to let students and staffs of NUS to have their own say on how we can save the Earth together. This survey can also serve as a reminder for NUS to continue saving the Earth as I believe much awareness has already been raised these few years.

I feel that the research question that you have proposed is rather general. For example, some students or staffs may feel that they are doing a part by not using plastic bags from NUS Co-op. However, the same group of people may be using a lot of plastic bags from the canteens for takeaways like curry puffs. They may feel that they are saving the Earth but they are actually not. Hence I suggest narrowing down the question further. For example, “Should all NUS students and staffs have their own lunch boxes for takeaways?”

Since there are many ways to save the environment in school, I believe we can come up with more possible questions to research on!

Hi Chiew Yen,

Personally I feel the awareness of the environment is there and there are several things that we have been advised to contribute to save the Earth through commercials and posters. However, whether people will put these into action is another question, which we can explore on. This can act as a feedback to the Campus Sustainability Committee so that appropriate activities can be taken for greater improvement.

Hi Chiew Yen, is your research question on awareness of conservation levels of NUS students and staff or is it whether NUS is "doing their part on conservation of our Earth too"?
